Where to start? Judge Dredd is badass, just like other Karl Urban characters LOTR’s Eomer and Riddick’s Vaako. I wasn’t familiar with hi
s name, and after looking him up on IMDB, I realized that I have seen him in so many awesome roles, but didn’t realize it because his look is always so radically different! I will definitely remember his name now, especially after seeing him introduce the movie at the screening! Move over Jason Statham, Karl Urban is in town. All his lines in the movie put together probably amount to less than a paragraph, and we never see his whole face, but just his mouth area has more expressions than Kristen Stewart.
OK, back to DREDD 3D- wow. It was much more graphic than I had thought it would be. It’s very violent. But it’s also well done. Here’s the story: “In a violent, futuristic city where the police have the authority to act as judge, jury and executioner, a cop teams with a trainee to take down a gang that deals the reality-altering drug, SLO-MO.” So, when people are on the drug, it shows everything in slow motion, which makes for some intense shootings and death scenes.
If you don’t like a lot of blood and gore, definitely skip this one. But on the flip side, if you do like that kind of thing- you’ll love this.
The 3D is actually pretty awesome. Normally, I’d rather not spend any extra money on the ticket, because the 3D is usually not even worth it, but in here, it really adds to the slo-mo effects, and the awesomeness of the judges. Also, I added “Judge” to my list of Halloween costumes for this year.
Both women played strong roles: one as the bad “guy,” the other as a rookie judge being assessed whether she will actually be a judge or not.
I loved the soundtrack. It was almost Tron-ish. It really made the movie more awesome and fun to watch.
DREDD is in theatres September 21, 2012. It is rated R for strong bloody violence, language, drug use and some sexual content. It is 1 hour and 35 minutes long.
So what did I think?
If you like the violence, sci-fi, or dystopian futures- definitely see it!
