Let’s Review: THE WOMAN IN BLACK

As far as scary movies go, this one hits most of the hot spots: 1900s-looking toys (including clowns), taxidermied monkeys, little girls with blank stares in 1900s-looking dresses and bows, and tense moments where something/someone pops out suddenly.

Cliché? Maybe a little. But it sure is creepy.

The scariest parts of the movie mostly happen because of the “soundtrack.” All is quiet while Arthur Kipps (Daniel Radcliffe) is looking around for a mysterious sound, when suddenly a jarring screaming noise assails your ears at the same moment the mysterious sound is identified. There will be screams.

Speaking of Daniel Radcliffe, yes, he stars in the film and it’s a “big deal,” but it has not been his first role since Harry Potter. It is his first feature film since Harry Potter. Before The Woman in Black, he was a naked horse boy (Equus) and a slacker trying to get ahead (How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying).

However, it really could’ve been anyone playing him in this movie. He was not bad, but he was not mind-blowingly good. But, he is Daniel Radcliffe, and CBS Films plans to bank on that.

Another Potter alum in the film is Ciarán Hinds, who played Aberforth Dumbledore. The rest of the cast was not Harry Potter, so they don’t matter. Just kidding. But they really weren’t memorable.

Plot line: “A young lawyer travels to a remote village where he discovers the vengeful ghost of a scorned woman is terrorizing the locals.” Expect that, plus creepy stuff. It’s a fun time.

And now, a visual presentation of The Woman in Black:

I hope you enjoyed this visual presentation of The Woman in Black.

Of course this is not the end for Mr. Radcliffe. He will be seen again in Kill Your Darlings and The Amateur Photographer, both in 2013.

THE WOMAN IN BLACK is in theatres Feb. 3, 2012.

It is rated PG-13 for thematic material and violence/disturbing images. It is 1 hour and 35 minutes long.

So what do I think?

If you like creepy scary movies, go have fun and see it.
